21c Museum Hotel Wedding in Downtown Durham

We are smitten kitten with Jana Sadovy and Jason Goebel’s 21c Museum Hotel wedding photo gallery. This real wedding blog is super special, y’all. On Saturday, October 21, 2023, Jana and Jason celebrated their love with help from their closest friends and family in the heart of Downtown Durham. Nikki Whitt Belch, founder and owner of Fancy This Photography, was honored to capture Jana and Jason’s wedding day as it unfolded.

“I think of these two as an old love,” Nikki says. “With every reincarnation, they always find one another. I love when couples are just amazing people inside and out. I’m thankful to have been a part of their wedding day.

Jana and Jason hosted their wedding ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception at 21c Museum Hotel in Durham. We love a versatile and convenient wedding venue! Plus, it’s a lot easier for wedding guests when all of the day’s events take place at one venue (especially when alcohol is involved!). There is so much to love about a 21c Museum Hotel wedding. We’ll go into more detail on why later in the blog.

The fall weather was on point for Jana and Jason. Picture clear skies and temperatures in the 60s. The wind was a little playful, but that only made photos more fun! Fancy This Photography works with the elements, not against them. Don’t miss gorgeous images of Jana’s bridal veil getting gently picked up by the wind.

Jason and Jana shared their first look in a beautiful brick alleyway known as 26 Alley in Downtown Durham.

About: 21c Museum Hotel Wedding in Downtown Durham

Jana and Jason shared their first look in one of Downtown Durham’s coolest corners. Tucked beside the beloved local bar Alley Twenty Six, just off E. Chapel Street, is a small pedestrian walkway. This secret alley is a hidden gem, perfect for romantic moments and wedding photos. We love the way this alley’s archways and twinkle lights frame couples in images. Not to mention, the couple always pop against those warm red bricks.

These pictures are so stunning,” says Jana. “Thank you so much for being a part of our wedding day!

Jana & Jason’s Wedding Day Looks

Jana looked stunning in a wedding dress from Lana Addison Bridal. Her gown featured long sleeves and a deep plunging neckline and back with buttons down the train. Jana rocked an elegant updo with a few curls shaping her face and makeup by Blissful Muse Co. Her veil was mid-length and caught the fall wind perfectly for photos. The bridesmaids looked fab in dark green dresses with lace cap-sleeves and half-up half-down curled hair.

We love a bride that knows how to accessorize! Jana wore a groovy pair of pale pink/lavender platform heels and walked like a queen through the streets of downtown Durham. A dazzling sapphire necklace and stud earrings matched the bride’s sapphire and diamond engagement ring.

Jason was a dapper groom! He wore a dark gray suit with a green knit tie, which I’m pretty sure Jana made herself. The groomsmen wore light gray suits with dark green satin ties. Lovely green boutonnieres made with eucalyptus leaves added a sweet touch to the guy’s apparel.

Nikki of Fancy This Photography loves capturing these details for couples. Her talent behind the lens showcased their personality and love, making each image a cherished memory.

Wedding Photos in Downtown Durham

We had to stop by the Durham Hotel for some downtown Durham wedding photo essentials. The Durham Hotel, originally built in 1968, once housed the Home Savings and Loan Association headquarters. Today, the mid-century modern building has been transformed into a boutique hotel, restaurant, rooftop bar, and event space. The unique symmetry and design of the Durham Hotel make it an excellent spot for wedding photos.

7 Photo Ideas for 21c Museum Hotel Weddings

  1. Pose with a Fuchsia Penguin - If you’re getting married at 21c Museum Hotel, you’ve got to get a photo with the building’s unofficial art mascot—full-size fuchsia penguin figures. These penguins are the best birds in town.

  2. Windows and Doors - Since the 21c Museum Hotel was built in 1937, the historic landmark’s architecture is stunning and art deco. Fancy This Photography loves snapping photos of happy couples within 21c’s retro window and door frames.

  3. The Art - We love taking photos of couples with and in front of the art featured in 21c Museum Hotel’s revolving exhibit. Art gallery pictures are fun and romantic. Absolutely nothing is off the table here.

  4. The Vault - Beneath the buzzing restaurant, bar, art galleries, hotel rooms, and event spaces of 21c, you’ll find a bank vault that has been restored into a lounge event space. Skip the noise for a quiet (and romantic) photo shoot in this hidden historic space.

  5. The Main Gallery - Whether you’re hosting your wedding ceremony, reception, or both in the main gallery at 21c Museum Hotel, this space is perfect for pictures. The high ceilings are highlighted with contemporary chandeliers, and we love when florists wrap greenery around the room’s wooden columns, as if the florals are growing upward.

  6. Elevators - OK, this one might surprise you, but the elevators in 21c Museum Hotel are like time machines into the past. You’ve got to get a picture entering or exiting these otherworldly portals.

  7. Counting House - Don’t miss this chic on-site restaurant, bar, and lounge located on the first floor of 21c Museum Hotel. Sip cocktails on cozy couches surrounded by yellow velvet curtains and fine art. We loved photographing Jana and Jason as they sipped coffee and nibbled macarons in this space.

Book Lovers Unite

The bride and groom are book lovers! They incorporated their passion for literature into their reception decor with books as centerpieces, topped with florals on a wooden slab. Guests received beautiful green bookmarks featuring a list of Jana and Jason’s favorite reads, including:

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman

Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier

And many more!

Classic Southern Elegance: Camryn & Christopher’s Timeless Wedding at the Carolina Inn

Timeless Romance at the Carolina Inn: Camryn & Christopher’s Wedding Day

Camryn and Christopher’s wedding at the Carolina Inn in Chapel Hill, NC, was nothing short of magical. Their love story began as high school sweethearts and grew into something timeless, with nearly seven years of cherished memories together. When Camryn first reached out to us, she described their relationship as "classic young lovers," and their wedding day reflected that beautifully—full of elegance, meaningful details, and heartfelt moments.

From the excitement of getting ready to the laughter-filled moments with their loved ones, Camryn and Christopher’s day was a perfect blend of romance and celebration. Surrounded by the Carolina Inn’s historic charm, their wedding unfolded like a storybook come to life.

The Morning Glow: Pre-Ceremony Elegance

The day began with Camryn preparing in one of the Carolina Inn’s stunning suites, where the soft morning light brought her wedding details to life. Courtney, one of Fancy This Photography’s talented photographers, has a remarkable ability to capture these quiet, meaningful moments with precision and artistry. From the delicate flat-lay of Camryn’s bridal accessories—her sparkling tiara, custom invitation suite, and perfume—to the hanging shot of her off-the-shoulder gown framed perfectly in the window, each detail was thoughtfully documented.

One of the sweetest moments from the morning was Camryn’s mother helping her into her gown. Against the backdrop of floral wallpaper and the Carolina Inn’s iconic black-and-white tiled floors, the images of their shared smiles and laughter radiated warmth and connection. Moments like these, where the love between family members shines, are what make Courtney’s work stand out—she finds beauty in the quiet, intimate moments.

As Camryn finished getting ready, she paused to adjust her earrings in the soft morning light. The serene expression on her face, paired with the glow from the window, captured the anticipation and excitement of the day ahead. These quiet reflections, framed with Courtney’s keen eye for light and composition, are the moments that set our photography apart.

A Timeless Venue for a Timeless Love

The Carolina Inn provided the perfect backdrop for Camryn and Christopher’s celebration. Known for its Southern charm and timeless architecture, the venue’s rich history complemented their classic style beautifully. From the lush greenery surrounding the property to the elegance of the ceremony space, every detail was thoughtfully chosen to reflect their vision.

Their talented vendor team brought everything together seamlessly:

  • Planning: @kasteventsandco

  • Florals: @trebellainc

  • Beauty: @peachcowgirlbeauty

  • Video: @lionfish_films

Trebella Florals created breathtaking arrangements of white, blush, and peach blooms, adding a soft and romantic touch to both the ceremony and reception spaces. The day flowed effortlessly, thanks to the incredible coordination of Kast Events and Co., while Lionfish Films preserved every heartfelt moment in motion.

A Few of Our Favorite Moments

  • The First Look: Christopher’s expression when he saw Camryn for the first time was unforgettable. His reaction said everything words couldn’t.

  • The Bridal Portraits: Camryn looked stunning in her off-the-shoulder gown, standing in the Carolina Inn’s iconic hallway. Her smile radiated joy and confidence, perfectly encapsulating her excitement for the day ahead.

  • The Ceremony: Set against a backdrop of lush greenery and soft florals, their vows felt intimate despite being surrounded by their loved ones.

  • The Reception: With elegant floral centerpieces by Tre Bella and a classic black-and-white dance floor, the reception was a celebration of love and connection. The couple’s first dance was a highlight, and Courtney’s images captured the movement and emotion effortlessly.

Her photography style aligns perfectly with the romantic, timeless aesthetic of Fancy This Photography while still showcasing her unique artistic perspective. She brings a calm presence to every wedding day, creating a relaxed atmosphere that allows couples to be their authentic selves. Whether it’s the smallest detail or the biggest moment, Courtney’s talent lies in capturing the soul of the day.
